I spent years harbouring ambitions to train as a teacher and in June 2013 I graduated from the Institute of Education with a post-compulsory PGCE. My placement was at Brooke House Sixth Form College (or BSix) in Clapton, East London. It was a tough year, but a brilliant place to learn and thoroughly rewarding.
For two years I taught English GCSE and Functional Skills to adults in the Waltham Forest area. I also provided one-to-one support for students with dyslexia.
2018 update: I was poised to take my teaching out of the classroom and into the community, setting up reading groups supporting adults with low levels of literacy. Then I got cancer and was out of action for 18 months, by which time I realised teaching wasn't for me.
I don't regret my PGCE for a second. Not only did I learn new skills but I started writing for the Times Educational Supplement and that's when I realised it's writing, not teaching, that I'm passionate about.
